Different types of air conditioners

Purchasing an air conditioning unit for the home is more necessary than a luxury because of the growing unpredictability of the seasons and climate. With all the options in the market right now, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and more challenging to figure out what you need. Luckily, once the choices and room size are narrowed down, it will be easy to figure out what we need.

There are a lot of air conditioning models on the market, and sizes will vary according to the brand, price, and appearance. Size is essential and will depend on the AC unit’s planned location and added features.

Standard AC Unit Dimensions

There is an expression that the bigger the air conditioner, the better it will be at cooling the room, but that is not the case entirely. Aside from lowering the temperature of a room, AC units also remove air moisture, and a larger AC for a smaller room will leave the room cold and dry.

If the cooling capacity is appropriate for the room size, the AC will better manage temperature and humidity in a room. This is also the case for a unit too small for a space, which will struggle to lower the room’s temperature.

The standard AC dimension is for a room of 100 to 150 square feet, with a BTU of 5000. Most of these AC units will come in sizes of 16 inches or 41 centimeters for the width and a height of 12 inches or 30 centimeters (window mounted unit). They may seem small but powerful enough to effectively a cool space of 150 square feet.

Standard Wall Air Conditioner Size

Standard wall air conditioning size

Aside from the basic window AC unit, a homeowner can install a wall air conditioner, also known as a thru-wall AC unit, in their home. A wall air conditioner can work more effectively since it seals the room airtightly.

The main difference between the two will be how they are installed and the venting technique done during installation. Many sizes are available for a wall AC’s since the perfect one for a home will require knowledge of the room size.

The standard size for most rooms in the house ranges from 100 to 250 square feet. The perfect AC unit for 100 to 250 square feet rooms will have a BTU of 5000 to 6000. These units’ sizes will vary but range from 1 to 1.5 tons.

Standard Casement Air Conditioner Size

If a homeowner has casement windows, the best AC units are casement or vertical air conditioning units. These AC units are characterized by their narrow widths and taller heights, as opposed to the broader and shorter look of a standard window air conditioner.

The minimum window width for a casement air conditioning unit is a window opening of at least 15 1/2 inches or 39 centimeters.

One of the best in the market are made by Frigidaire, and one of their most famous unit of casement AC has a height of 20 1/4 inches or 51 centimeters, a narrower width of 14 1/5 inches or 36 centimeters, and a unit depth of 23 1/2 inches or about 60 centimeters.

Standard Window Air Conditioner Size

The most standard AC system any homeowner can get is a window air conditioner that can be easily installed in their rooms. However, the perfect size of window cooling unit they need will depend on the size of the room, whether they are installing it in a smaller kid’s room or a bigger space like the primary bedroom

The standard window AC units are the 1-ton units, and most of them will have a height of 15 inches or 38 centimeters, a width from side to side of 24 inches or 61 centimeters, and a depth from front to back of 22 inches or 56 centimeters.

This is close to the size of the standard AC units since they are small but mighty when it comes to cooling down an average-sized room. Visit our guide to window air conditioner dimensions here.

Standard Central Air Conditioning System Size

Sizing in terms of looking for the perfect air conditioning units will be measured by their cooling power more than their casing or physical size. So, a larger AC unit will not always equate to a cooler air conditioning capacity.

What they are measured by instead is their BTUs or tonnage. Central air conditioners for a residential area will have AC units with a thermal capacity of 20000 to 50000 BTU.

Mini-split AC System Size

mini-split air handler dimensions

A high-wall air handler for a mini-split system is generally 12 inches or 30 centimeters from top to bottom, 32 inches or 81 centimeters for the width from side to side, with a depth of 9 inches or 23 centimeters from front to back.

At the same time, the heat pump placed on the outside of a home will have a height of 24 inches or 61 centimeters, a depth of 12 inches or 30 centimeters, and a width of 32 inches or 81 centimeters. Knowing the two is essential since both make up a mini-split AC system.

There are also devices on the floor called low-wall air handlers, and they are generally 24 inches or 61 centimeters high, with a width of 29 inches or 74 centimeters and a depth of 8 1/2 inches or 22 centimeters.

2 Ton Air Conditioner Dimensions

Most 2-ton air conditioning units are heavier mini-split AC systems with an indoor AC unit and an outdoor compressor. Most of these units are installed near the ceiling or above a room’s doorway to ensure maximum airflow in every corner of a bigger space.

Central Air Conditioner Dimensions

Central ac measurements

Central air conditioning units are the most extensive cooling and heating units, primarily utilized to provide cooling and heating services for buildings and businesses. Since many of them are available in different sizes for length, width, and depth, most units are measured on how heavy they are for accurately measuring from 1 to 5 tons.

Like window and split-type air conditioners, homeowners and business owners are not required to get the biggest ones, and the perfect cooling unit should match the size of the space.

For an area of 600 to 1000 square feet, get a 1.5-ton unit, while a bigger 2500 to 3300 square feet of space will be cooled by a 5-ton central AC unit effectively. If you reside in a two story house, temperatures may be much warmer on the second story. In this case, ceiling fans may help circulate and pull cold air up to cool the upper level.

5000 BTU AC Sizing

The smallest air conditioning unit anyone can find is the 5000 BTU window AC unit with a weight capacity of less than .5-ton. One of the smallest 5000 BTU AC units in the market is the LG LW6017R 5000 BTU unit.

Window AC BTU’s

One of the most standard cooling units is the window air conditioner; they are both cost-efficient and provide the proper heat or coolness, given that the right size for the right room area is chosen.

For a bedroom with an area of 100 to 200 square feet, getting a window AC unit of around 5000 to 7500 BTU is enough to cool it. Still, other window AC units are going up to 14000 to 18000 BTU to cool a space of 550 to 700 square feet.

AC Compressor Dimensions

Air conditioning with compressors is more often than not on the outdoor unit. They are the largest part of the unit, and the more larger they get, the higher the BTU and the more powerful these units are.

Split systems have compressors outside of a home, and most will have a height of 16.5 to 23.6 inches or 42 to 60 centimeters and a width ranging from 26 to 31 inches or 66 to 80 centimeters.

RV AC Dimensions

Like purchasing an AC unit for a room, choosing the right size for the entire RV area is the key to ensuring efficient cooling and heating capacity. Getting an RV AC with a BTU of 10000 might be too weak to cool the whole RV in the summer while getting a BTU of 20000 might be overkill and can use up too much gas or electricity, so a unit at 15000 is suitable for almost all RV sizes

One example is the Domestic Brisk II, with a dimension of 29 by 27 by 13 inches or 74 by 69 by 33 centimeters.
