Below we help determine what size chandelier for a dining room, including taking measurements, wall and table sizing.
A chandelier is a popular and stylish light fixture for a dining room – as long as you have the space for it. When it comes to installing a chandelier in a room, size – of both the room and the chandelier –really does matter.
Best Size Chandelier for Dining Room
If are placing a chandelier in your dining room, it will become a focal point of the room so you need to ensure that it is the right size for your dining room.
When it comes to the best sized chandelier for dining rooms it is usually best to go big. This is especially true for formal dining rooms where you want to make a grand impression.
To determine the chandelier you need, you should consider the size of your dining room table. Choose a chandelier that’s 1/2 to 3/4 the width of your dining table for best results.
You just need to make sure to size the chandelier so that there is at least 48 inches from the end of the chandelier to the dining room walls.
Chandelier Size for Dining Room Table
You need to look at two things, the diameter of your chandelier compared to your table and the space between your chandelier and the dining room surface.
The rule of thumb is that chandeliers that are going to hang over a dining room table need to have a diameter that is 1/2 to 2/3 of the table’s width. Read more about the right dining table dimensions for your room here.
You should also consider hanging height when determining the size of the chandelier you will hang over your dining room table.
If you have an 8-foot ceiling, you should choose a chandelier that will hang around 30-36 inches above the top of your dining room table.
For higher ceilings, just add three inches for every extra foot of ceiling height. So, for a 10-foot ceiling, you need a chandelier that will hang around 36-42 inches above your dining room table.
How to Determine the Size of a Dining Room Chandelier
First, add the dimensions of the room together in feet. Then take that number in inches, that should be the diameter of the chandelier you should be looking for.
For example, you have a room that’s around 14’x20’ feet, you need to find a chandelier with a diameter of 34” inches.
You can also follow these general guidelines that interior designers have set down for rooms with “regular” or common dimensions.
• Rooms smaller than 10×10 feet need a chandelier with diameter of 17-20 inches.
• Rooms that are 12×12 feet need a chandelier with a diameter of 22-27 inches.
• Rooms that are 14×14 feet need a chandelier with a diameter of 24-32 inches.
