7 His and Her Walk-in Closet Floor Plans with Smart Shared Designs
A well-planned closet space can alleviate a lot of the frustration while searching for clothing in the early morning hours. This is especially true when you’re a couple sharing the space between two people. By thoughtfully separating each side into his and her zones, one can create a harmonious environment that works for both people. Below, I share seven different his and her walk-in closet floor plans to help you design or remodel your own room to focus on your own unique needs.
10×10 Split-Access Walk-in Closet Layout
By splitting your 10 × 10 closet into “his” and “hers” sides with a walkway in the middle, you gain storage on both walls that can be customized to the individual’s needs.
Layout Details: This 10 ft × 10 ft split‐access walk‐in closet layout has an entry door positioned at the bottom, allowing you to enter into a central walkway to access the clothing on either side. About 4 feet of floor space runs from the entry toward the back wall, providing additional room to move or dress.
On the “His” side (Left) there are hanging sections that include multiple tiers of double rods for more vertical storage for men’s shirts, jackets, and pants. A tall‐hanging section can be added if needed for longer garments like jackets and coats. Open shelves can be used for folded items like sweaters, T‐shirts, and jeans. Drawers or cubbies can be added below the clothing rods for storing shoes or accessories.
On the “Hers” side (Right), similar to the opposite, it features double‐hanging rods, plus the possibility of a taller rod for dresses. The her-side shelving can be used for purses, folded clothes, or accessories. Down below, drawers or pull‐out baskets can store items like scarves or delicate pieces. Some of the space toward the front should be dedicated to vertical shoe racks for easy visibility.
Important Dimensions:
- Room size: The space measures 10 feet wide by 10 feet deep (approximately 3 m × 3 m).
- Walkway: A 4‐foot wide corridor is comfortable for two people to move around.
- Clothing: 3 feet of depth for double hanging rods on both sides. (Standard hanging rod depth is 24 inches.)
- Top Storage: Overhead shelves near the ceiling. (16″ wide.)
Design Tips:
- A sliding door or outward‐swinging door will help preserve more interior closet space.
- Install a full-length mirror at the end of the corridor.
- Use double rods (one above the other)on both sides to maximize the clothing storage.
- Add a pull‐out hamper if space allows for dirty clothing.
- Layer lighting by combining overhead fixtures and LED strips under shelves to avoid shadows.
- Consider an HVAC vent or a small fan to help keep the closet fresh and protect clothes from moisture.
8×12 Galley-Style Double-Wall Closet Design
The galley style design is perfect for efficiently organizing two people’s wardrobes on either side with a path down the middle.
Layout Details: This 8 ft × 12 ft galley‐style closet uses both walls for clothing with a walkway running down the center. The central corridor uses 3 feet of floor space, which leaves around 2.5 feet of depth on each side for shelving, hanging rods, and other clothes storage. The way this floor plan is set up allows for slightly more storage space for the woman’s shoe collection directly across from her side, if needed. Both sides are equipped with double-hanging rods with an overhead area for extra shelving. The lower sections can be used for drawers or shoe racks.
Important Dimensions:
- Room size: 8 feet wide by 12 feet long.
- Walkway: 3 feet of aisle clearance is used.
- Women’s side: 4-foot racks for regular clothing and 4-foot racks for longer dresses. An additional 4-foot section for delicates or accessories in drawers.
- Man’s side: 6-foot hanging storage, 2-foot for miscellaneous, and 4-foot for men’s or women’s shoes or additional items.
Design Tips:
- For more versatility, install adjustable sections featuring shelving and rods, to change the wardrobe with seasonal changes.
- Install a full 12 feet length of upper shelves above the rods to store seldom used items like luggage, coats, or bulky bedding.
- Layer overhead fixtures with LED strips or puck lights under the shelves to make it easier to find items.
- Add pull‐out drawers, dedicated shoe shelves, and racks for belts or ties, and jewelry inserts to keep smaller items neatly organized.
- Maintain a minimum of a 3‐foot aisle to more easily try on clothes.
- Hang a full‐length mirror on the back wall or inside the door for dressing.
- Consider a pull-out ironing board or hamper for more efficiency.
10×12 U-Shape Zoned Closet Floor Plan
A U‐shaped closet provides a multi-purpose layout with plenty of room for different types of clothing storage around three sides, while keeping the central area open and accessible.
Layout Details: This 10 ft × 12 ft U‐shaped, closet floor plan breaks the room into different zones with storage on three sides (left, right and top.) This leaves the central area open with the entry on the bottom, allowing you to easily access the items needed. The “His” and “Hers” sections flank each side, with the top wall devoted to a shared accessory area.
Important Dimensions:
- Room size: 10 feet wide by 12 feet long.
- Woman’s side: 7-foot clothing rack and 3-foot accessory area
- Man’s side: 5-foot rack and 5-foot shoe shelving
- Shared top wall: 4 ft x 3 ft accessory cabinet with drawers
- Center Aisle: 6 ft clearance
Design Tips:
- Consider adding a bench or ottoman in the center to try on shoes and clothes and add a focal point.
- Install custom curved or angled corner shelves, instead of hard 90° corners, to soften the layout.
- Add a rotating shoe carousel or vertical tower as a space‐saving feature to better use a hard-to-reach corner.
- Try mirrored doors or above the accessory area for changing and to make the space feel bigger.
- Add decorative or crown molding around the top and bottom to give a more luxe feel.
- Split the his-side shoe area to a his-and-hers rack to accommodate extra high heels and boots.

Layout Details: This 12 ft × 14 ft symmetrical walk‐in closet design has a stand-out central island that serves as a stunning focal point. The symmetrical design has both left and right sides that mirror each other, each providing hanging clothing rods, shoe space, and shelving. - Install a glamorous chandelier or pendant light fixture above the island.
- Inside the island, install pull‐out racks for belts, ties, or scarves and drawers for underwear with dividers for jewelry and watches.
- Consider devoting part of the island to create a built-in bench.
- Use a marble or quartz countertop on the island to elevate the look and feel of the design.
- Install cabinetry with a chic color palette with grays, whites, or rich wood tones to continue the luxe feel.
8×10 Compact “Split-Section” Closet Layout
By splitting the closet’s wall height into a top hanging rod and lower cabinets or shelving, you can maximize the available space for versatile clothing storage.
Layout Details: This 8 ft × 10 ft compact “split‐section” closet layout is also referred to as a “split‐access” or “side‐by‐side” design. Its primary function is to dedicate each side to different wardrobe needs and leave a central aisle for easy access. This arrangement helps a couple organize their clothes, shoes, and accessories without feeling cramped. This setup is ideal for smaller homes or condos to maintain a clutter-free design.
Important Dimensions:
- Room size: 8 feet deep by 10 feet wide (approx. 2.4 m × 3.0 m)
- Walkway: A 4 foot walkway is fairly generous for a smaller closet of this width
- Clothing racks: 3 ft is available on both sides, which leaves room underneath for lower cabinets or cubbies.
- Dedicated shoe cabinet: 4 ft of cabinet space is available on the man’s side for shoes and folding shirts and pants.
- Window: 4ft is devoted to mirrors or windows on the back.
Design Tips:
- Use the top 4 feet in vertical height for each of the hanging sections, and the bottom 4 feet of each side, divided into drawers, shelves, or shoe storage.
- Placing a mirror on the back of the door or the back section of the wall visually opens up and brightens the space.
- Ensure the area under the clothes rods stays organized by using storage bins or baskets to keep things easy to find.
- Use a sliding barn door or pocket door to free up wall space from the inswing of a regular type.
- Reducing the central aisle to about 36 inches will allow you more generous cabinet capacity if desired.
- An overhead flush mount or small chandelier fixture can add a sense of style if the ceiling’s height permits.

Layout Details: This 6 ft × 14 ft galley‐style walk‐through closet has a very narrow configuration that is carefully designed to allow a minimum of 24″ of walkway clearance and two 24″ clothing racks on both walls. The layout is perfect for connecting rooms, like between a bedroom and a bathroom. This way, one can shower in the morning and immediately access the clothing needed for the day.
