    How to Use the Bathroom Floor Plan Tool

    The planner shows your bathroom to scale and informs you if an item won’t fit. You just need to enter the room dimensions, place a bath or a toilet by dragging it in, and the program will check the spacing against building regulations as you move the items around. There’s no need to sign up, and there’s nothing to install; it works on a phone, but a laptop is easier when it comes to the more complicated settings.
     
     
     
    Start with the room, not the fixtures – At the top, enter your width and depth in feet. Measure from wall to wall, from finished surface to finished surface, not from the framing. The grid is then redrawn instantly, and each square is equal to one foot. Smooth it off to the nearest half foot; you’re checking if the layout works, not placing the tiles.
     
    Drop in fixtures and drag them around – Each button places a piece into the first available position; the standard sizes are the usual ones – a 5-foot bathtub, a 2 by 2.5-foot toilet and a 4-foot vanity. You can drag them to reposition them, and all the items will snap to 6 inch intervals, preventing a situation where a toilet ends up 3.7 inches from the wall. Whenever you select a fixture, you will see its precise size; you can type in new figures or take the blue corner and drag it. If the tub is 66 inches rather than 60, make the necessary change. Often you’ll find that real bathrooms usually do not match the sizes given in the catalog.
     
    Rotate so things face the right way – The rotate button causes a fixture to be rotated in quarters. Yet this is more important than it might at first appear. The planner keeps track of the direction in which each fixture is oriented, since the clear floor space has to be placed in that direction. If a vanity is up against a wall, then it will be automatically flipped around.
     
    Doors and windows snap to walls – If you drag a door towards any wall, it will lock onto it and then slide along; the door also draws out its swing arc, which is the section that almost everyone overlooks when sketching on paper. If the door arc is causing it to hit the floor, then turn the hinge to the opposite side or fit the door to swing out; an outswinging door is actually a proper solution for a cramped bathroom, not a quick fix.     Sinks sit in vanities – If you place a sink onto a vanity it will fit inside it like a basin. When you move the vanity, the sink will as well, and if you want a pedestal or a wall-mounted sink that stands on its own, you can push the sink back out.
     
    Read the warnings as you go – If the floor is shaded green, then there is sufficient space in front of the fixture; if it is shaded red, then there isn’t. Below the toolbar, the problem is stated in simple terms together with the code section it came from. For example, “The center line of the toilet is 12 inches from the nearest wall or fixture and 15 inches are required.” There is a dropdown menu which allows you to switch between the code minimums and the more lenient NKBA recommendations. A layout can comply with the code and yet still be uncomfortable. This point is worth noting.
     
    Save it, share it & print it – The layout is saved automatically, so closing the tab will not result in it being lost. The ‘Copy Share Link’ option puts the entire plan into a URL which you can text to your partner or paste into an email to a contractor. With ‘Download Image’ you get a clean plan complete with its dimensions. ‘Print or Save PDF’ provides you with something you can give to someone face to face.

    Best Practices for a Bathroom Layout

     
    Building a bathroom with the toilet, sink and shower all sharing one wet wall is the cheapest type of bathroom to construct. Each time you move a fixture to a different wall, you need more piping, more labor, and in some cases the floor has to be raised. A layout which looks perfect until the door opens into the vanity isn’t a layout at all, it’s just a drawing. The planner will pick it out, but it’s simpler to design around the way the door swings than it is to redesign afterward.
     
    Build in a little slack – Code minimums are minimums; if your plan just about clears the distance in front of the toilet by a single inch, then one thick tile or a vanity that is only slightly deeper will bring you below the requirement. When you have some extra space, aim a few inches beyond the line.
     
    Test the version you think won’t fit – It’s free to do this, so why not? If you replace the tub with a 36 inch shower you’ll see the possibilities. Rotate the vanity through 90 degrees and move the door to the opposite wall. Generally, people arrive at the layout they decide on either on their third or fourth attempt, not on the first.

    What the Code Check Is Based On

    The planner compares your layout with the International Residential Code, which is the model code that most of the United States bases its building practices on. The following is what it is assessing.

    It also identifies two cases where something is not a number in the code book, namely fixtures that overlap one another and a door whose opening would hit on something else. The NKBA states this second point clearly by saying that a door must not interfere with the safe use of a fixture.
     
    Some observations regarding how to read those numbers.
     
    • Fifteen inches is measured from the center of the toilet, not from its edge. This is the reason why a toilet requires about 30 inches of wall space to itself.
    • A clear surface can be measured against any solid object, such as a wall, another fixture, or a closed door.
    • The size of the shower is determined by the final interior dimensions, which means that the tiling and the backer board have to be measured according to the framing dimensions. A 30 inch stud opening doesn’t mean the shower is 30 inches wide.
    • The column set out by the NKBA is not binding law; it consists of recommendations issued by the National Kitchen and Bath Association, and it should be followed if the room permits.
    It is important to note that local regulations can differ and shall always be given priority over the model code. Whilst some areas require a distance of 24 inches in front of a toilet rather than 21 inches, accessible bathrooms are based on a completely different standard. You should use this planner to work out the layout, but then check with your local building authority or your contractor about anything that you intend to build.
     
    Where to Start – Take the dimensions of your room, put those figures in, and start by placing the tub or the shower there. Next, add the door. The rest have to work out how to fit with what remains.
