Primary Bathroom Layouts with a Shower and Tub

The best primary or master bathrooms don’t just look pretty; they offer a functional flow that works for their space. In order to make the most of a shower and tub layout, they need to be placed with purpose, making them easy to navigate and use. Below, I share five primary bathroom layouts with a shower and tub so you can find a floor plan that works for your situation. You’ll also see some of my design tips, the exact dimensions, and the circulation notes you can hand off to a contractor.

6×10 Compact Modern Bathroom Layout With Combined Shower And Tub

This layout works because it uses a combination shower and tub along one wall and hides the toilet in a compact niche to create one small aisle that makes this small 6′ × 10′ master bathroom feel open and easy to use.

6x10 Compact Modern Bathroom Layout With Combined Shower And Tub

Layout Details: As you enter from a sliding/pocket door at the center of the upper 10-foot wall, you’ll find a slim vanity sink to your right and a shower and tub combo to your left. The single vanity measures 21″-deep × 36″-wide and  sits near the door for ease of access. Opposite the vanity, the full-length tub/shower combo measures 30″ × 60″ and occupies the full 6 foot right side. Shower heads and a recessed niche are on the upper side with a built-in bench at the foot of the tub in the bottom corner. The toilet marked WC is tucked into the lower-left 3′ × 4′ zone, and visually shielded by a short partition/pony wall from the main aisle. This setup creates privacy at the toilet without closing off the entire room.

Dimensions:

  • Room size: 6′ × 10′ (60 sq ft)
  • Door: 24″ sliding/pocket entry on the top
  • Vanity: 21″ D × 36″ W with a single sink
  • Tub/shower: 30″ W × 60″ L
  • Toilet zone: 3′ × 4′ with a privacy half-wall
  • Aisle in front of vanity: 68.6″
  • Zone separating toilet/bench: 42″

Design Tips:

  • Use a pocket or barn-style slider. This will provide more floor space in the interior.
  • Choose a 21″-deep or wall-hung vanity to fit the space provided.
  • Go with a glass panel (fixed or sliding partition) on the tub instead of a heavy curtain for a more luxe feel.
  • Run large-format floor tile in the long direction across the 10′ run for a seamless look.
  • Place a recessed niche inside the shower for bath accessories.
  • Add a bench to the tub/shower enclosure for shaving and grooming.
  • Add task lighting with a backlit mirror above the vanity and damp-rated recessed lights overhead.
  • Keep towels handy with hooks by the bench and a short bar on the pony wall.

8×10 Large Standard Bathroom Floor Plan With Separate Tub And Shower

This plan separates grooming, bathing, and the toilet area into separate zones with a central aisle so this 8′ × 10′ bath offers dual-user functionality without feeling cramped.

At the top-left, there’s a 36″ × 48″ stand-alone shower enclosure behind a hinged glass door, to keep spray contained and maintain open sightlines. The lower half of the room starts with a standard 32″ × 60″ alcove tub in the lower right corner for soaking or giving kids baths, and a private toilet niche measuring 30″ × 48″ tucked into the lower left. There’s about 38″ of comfortable clearance in front of the vanity, which narrows to a short 24″ pinch point in front of the shower.

  • Toilet niche: 30″ W × 48″ D with slider/pocket
  • Aisle at vanity: 38″
  • Narrow point near shower: 24″

Design Tips:

  • If the 24″ pinch point feels tight, shave it with a frameless shower door or use a sliding shower door.
  • Open up the toilet niche to create more clearance if needed at the end.
  • Use clear glass for the shower door and a low-profile curb for water containment.
  • Install wall-mounted faucets to save on counter space.
  • Use a three-part lighting plan with vertical sconces or a backlit mirror at the vanity, recessed damp-rated cans over the shower, tub and aisle for even illumination.
  • Add storage above the toilet.
  • Vent well: place a quiet exhaust fan near the shower/tub side and put it on a timer or humidity sensor.
