Open-concept kitchens and living rooms look amazing and are perfect for entertaining, with better natural light and flexible layouts. They feel larger, and the improved sightlines help you keep an eye on young children. They have other advantages, like a higher resale value and having a design continuity, which means you can use one cohesive style throughout the space with matching flooring, colors, and finishes for a high-end look. On the downside, these larger spaces can be more difficult to properly plan and define, and sometimes even feel like furniture is floating without purpose. Below I share five creative large open concept kitchen with island and living room layouts you can use for inspiration for your own remodel project. These designs will help so that your rooms look planned and intentional, and everything flows the way it should.

Floor Plan Details: This 16′ x 28′ great room is set up like an open galley-style kitchen and a lounge. Since all of the cabinets and countertops are placed along the left side and at the island, it creates a galley-effect with a 42″ aisle in between that’s large enough for two people to work side by side. You can look out from inside the cooking space out into the living room, which is perfect for entertaining or families with kids. The eight-foot island provides enough space for four stools, so guests can dine in or just hang out with the chef. The one-wall kitchen arrangement runs down the left side with the fridge at the bottom. This is followed by range, sink, and dishwasher in an efficient order. The 8-foot island gives you extra prep space, adds seating, and becomes a visual divider that separates the kitchen from the living area.
The living zone on the right half of the room features a full-size sofa that faces the TV against the right wall. There’s a coffee table centered in front of the sofa and an angled accent chair off to the bottom-right corner to create a conversation area. There’s space for houseplants in the upper corner to add some symmetry to the design. The overall result is a cohesive lounge that feels separate from the cooking space, yet close enough to feel connected.

This design goes with an L-shaped kitchen combined with a 10′ island with seating for four, that looks out onto a large sofa lounge.
Floor Plan Details: This 18′ x 30′ plan uses an L-shape kitchen corner and a living lounge, great room to create an inviting and relaxing design. The kitchen is placed in the left corner in an L-shape, with a long 10-foot island forming the divider between the spaces. The cooking zone starts with the pantry on the lower end, followed by the fridge and the range. On the upper side sits the sink and dishwasher with an abundance of open countertop. The island works well as the social hub as it’s sized for entertaining at 10′ long with seating on the living room side, so guests are out of the way while the cooking is happening. On the right half of the room, the living area features a 10′ sofa that’s floating in the middle, facing the TV. There is a coffee table in the middle of the lounge with an extra swivel lounge chair near the top-right to promote easy conversations.

Design Tips:
In the L-kitchen run uppers to the ceiling on the top wall, and use one tall pantry closet near the entry doorway.
Choose island stools with slim profiles or low backs to better keep sightlines open and also help to naturally widen the space.
Place an area rug under the sofa with the front legs on top.
Add a low console under the TV to put it at the proper height for seated viewing.
For lighting, add pendants over the island, recessed or slim linear fixtures in the kitchen and living spaces, and one floor lamp by the sofa.
Best For: For those wanting a great room with a roomy island and easy traffic flow for families and entertaining.
20×24 L-Shape Kitchen with 9ft Island, and TV on Short Wall Floor Plan
This design places an L-shaped kitchen on the left, with a 9′ island, and a TV-focused lounge on the right, with open sightlines to patio views.
Floor Plan Details: This 20′ x 24′ great room uses an L-shaped kitchen in the left corner with a 9ft island with four stools to keep things sociable. The cooking area looks out onto the living space, and the entire plan remains sightline-friendly for the patio door views. The kitchen mainly runs down the left wall, starting with the refrigerator at the bottom, then the sink, then the dishwasher above it. The cooktop/range is located in the short top wall, with a corner lazy Susan so that the hard-to-reach area in the cabinets becomes more usable. The 9-foot island is parallel to the cabinets on the left and forms a natural divider between the cooking and lounging spots.
Inside the living area, a 7ft sofa floats facing the coffee table and a wall-mounted TV. This arrangement keeps the majority of the floor space open for a bright and airy environment. You could add extra armchairs to the lower walls for additional seating or to make the area more conversation-friendly if desired.
Dimensions:
Room size: 20′ x 24′
Island size: 108″ x 36″ (9′ x 3′)

Dishwasher: 24″
Range: 30″
Coffee table size: 3.2′ x 1.8′ (about 38″ x 22″)
TV shown on short wall: 48″
Design Tips:
Keep the upper cabinets and tall elements concentrated on the left side so the top wall stays visually lighter and doesn’t detract from the patio’s outdoor views, which act as the focal point.
Avoid bulky stools or those with wide backs to keep the sightlines open from the kitchen to the patio doors.
By choosing a slimmer sofa profile, you benefit from a more open and roomy feel.
Add a waterfall edge to the island to enhance its high-end look from the lounge.
Add low plants to either side of the living area to balance the TV wall and visually connect the living area to the outdoors.
Best for: Those with medium-sized spaces that want an airy feel with open sightlines to the outdoor views.
22×26 U-Shape Kitchen with 7.5ft Island and Conversational Living Room with Fireplace
This open-concept room design pairs a U-shaped kitchen with a 7.5 ft island, and an attached pantry with a large, comfortable, social living area centered around a fireplace for an inviting and relaxed feel.
Floor Plan Details: This 22′ x 26′ great room is split into two zones, with a U-shaped kitchen on the left and a conversational living room with a fireplace on the right. The kitchen wraps the left and top walls and faces a 7.5 ft island with seating for three. On the lower end, there’s a full walk-in pantry with a 24″ wide aisle, so all of your dry goods and food storage are located nearby, but kept out of sight. The kitchen is arranged with the refrigerator on the lower outside end, followed by the sink and dishwasher in the middle, and the range on the short top run. U-shapes are excellent because they maximize the amount of cabinets and countertops you can have, and when combined with a large island, make meal prep quicker and easier.
The living area is arranged for face-to-face seating for conversations, instead of just for watching TV. A 10 sofa is floated in the middle, facing the fireplace wall, with two lounge chairs angled toward the couch. A small round coffee table eliminated sharp corners, making it easier to walk around. The floor plan is purposely left open without crowding in too much furniture, so it’s easy to walk through, and it feels appealing.
Dimensions:
Room size: 22′ x 26′
Island size: 90″ x 36″ (7.5′ x 3′)
Kitchen run callout: 96″ / 8′ (on the top side)
Appliance/cabinet widths shown:
Range: 30″

Refrigerator: 36″
Pantry aisle: 24″
Key clearances shown:
Sink run to island: 48″ (labeled as 1.2192 m)
Range run to island: 42″ (labeled as 1.0668 m)
Island to sofa / main passage: 48″
Behind sofa to wall: 51″
Sofa to coffee table clearance: 26.6″
Living furniture sizes shown:
Sofa length: 10′
Round coffee table: 2.7′ diameter
Fireplace label shown: 4′ x 1′
Design Tips:
Add a lazy Susan to kitchen corners to better store bulky pots/pans or small appliances.
For a 36″ deep island, use a 12″ overhang so there’s room for legs underneath, and choose slimmer-profile stools so they look light and are tuckable.
Choose a round table to soften the traffic lanes around the sofa.
Set up the fireplace as the focal point, but create balance by adding matching sconces, built-ins, or a pair of tall cabinets or plants flanking either side.
Anchor the conversation seating with a large rug to frame this spot for an open plan.
Best for: For those who cook a lot and want maximum counter and cabinet space without feeling closed off from the main living area.
24×32 L-Kitchen with 12ft Island, and Entertainer’s Great Room with Two Seating Zones
For those who love to entertain, this kitchen provides a massive 12′ x 42″ island with space for five stools that separates the L-shaped cabinetry arrangement from the comfortable TV-and-conversation seating area.
Floor Plan Details: This 24′ x 32′ great room is an entertainer’s dream that’s basically two hangout zones with one oversized island for separation. The kitchen is situated in the left corner in an L-shape with the refrigerator at the bottom, followed by the sink and dishwasher on the left and the range and a reach-in pantry on the top. The 12-foot island is a huge star of the show here, with seating for up to five comfortably. At 42″, it’s deep enough to feel luxurious and fit an extra prep sink, under-counter microwave, warming drawer, or even a wine cooler. There’s currently a beverage fridge at the lower end for convenience. The size of the island creates a natural separation between the kitchen and lounge, but still acts as seating for either space when needed. On the living side, the room is arranged like a media and conversation zone with a long 10ft sofa facing the TV wall. There are also two accent chairs sitting opposite each other around a coffee table in the middle. The entire setup keeps the TV view clear, but also makes it easy to have conversations without moving any furniture around.
Dimensions:
Room size: 24′ x 32′
Island size: 144″ x 42″ (12′ x 3’6″)
Kitchen appliances (shown):
Range: 30″
Sink base: 36″
Dishwasher: 24″
Refrigerator: 36″
Pantry width (shown): 48″
Key clearances/spacing:
Range to island aisle: 48″
Sink run to island aisle: 54″
Island seating side to sofa zone: 60″
Sofa to coffee table spacing: 68″
Coffee table to each chair: 24″
Main seating width: 160″
Coffee table size: 3.2′ x 1.8′ (about 38″ x 22″)
TV size: 75″
Beverage section near island: 30″ (depth)
Path near bottom glazing/entry line: 42″
Design Tips:
Since the island is such a statement piece, go with a waterfall edge, or for a more rustic or traditional design, add panels, end legs, so it feels like a centerpiece.
Use the beverage section as your party buffer and place glasses, an ice drawer, or a beverage fridge nearby.
Use the large island to house other small appliances like a microwave drawer, wine cooler, trash compactor, or even an additional sink on top.
Choose stools that tuck all the way in to keep the sightlines free.
Float the sofa on a big rug with the front legs on it.
Balance the 75″ TV wall with a low console and tall plants, sconces, or shallow built-ins on both sides for more balance.
Keep the paint and furniture color palette consistent. Use the same cabinet color with matching hardware.
Best for: For those with large households, or who love hosting and want a big island with seating and two separate living clusters.
Universal spacing rules I used (so you can adapt these to your interior)
Work aisles: 42″ for one cook, 48″ for two.
Stool spacing: 24″ per seat; knee/overhang 12″ at 36″ counter height (15″ at 42″ bar height).
Walkway behind stools: 42″ at the minimum; 48″ to 60″ preferred if it’s a central passage.
Sofa-to-TV distance: Roughly 2×–1.6× screen diagonal (e.g., 65″ TV 7′ to 9′).
