Bathrooms with Water Closet Layouts That Balance Style & Privacy

Bathrooms with water closet layouts

Many people feel that a great bathroom feels calm and looks beautiful, while giving everyone the privacy they need. That’s why water closet (WC) layouts shine by placing the toilet in its own small room. This way, you separate “quick use” from everyday grooming, reduce through traffic, contain odors, and provide privacy. The result is a space that functions better for couples, families with kids, and guests. Below, I’ll share five of my favorite bathrooms with water closet layouts so you can see what works and exactly how to plan your remodel project.

You enter through a 28″ sliding door into a 30″ aisle down the center with the sink on the right and the toilet room entry to your left. In the upper right, there’s a 36″ × 36″ neo-angle shower. To the left of the enclosure, there’s a slim linen closet niche measuring 39″ × 11″.  A pocket door opens to the water closet on the left with the toilet set in a 30″ × 60″ alcove.

Dimensions:

  • Room size: 5′ × 7′ (60″ × 84″)
  • Entry door clearance: 28″
  • Center walking clearance: 30″
  • Corner shower: 36″ × 36″ (neo-angle)
  • Water closet compartment: 30″ × 60″
  • Linen cabinet/niche: 39″ high × 11″ deep (approx. footprint 39″ × 11″)

Design Tips:

  • Use pocket or barn doors at the bathroom’s entry and WC to eliminate interior door-swing intrusion.
  • Choose a shallow vanity with a size of 18″ to 20″ deep to fit the space.
  • Go frameless on the neo-angle shower and use clear glass to visually expand the room.
  • Recess the linen cabinet between the studs to gain more storage for linens and towels.
  • Offset the lighting with a pair of sconces at the mirror and a small recessed downlight at the shower.
  • Install large-format, light color tile with minimal grout to make the room appear larger.
  • Use a solid-core pocket door and soft-close guides to cut down on noise inside and outside of the room.

Perfect for: Small homes, guest baths, or apartment remodels.

On the upper wall, there is a window to let in natural light. The upside-down T-walkway allows for multiple people to use the space without interfering with each other.

  • Use a 24vanity with drawers and not doors so items are reachable for kids.
  • Install a recessed medicine cabinet over the sink and a niche over the toilet for extra shelves.
  • Use large-format, light toned tiles across the floor for visual continuity.
  • Layer the lighting with vanity sconces at eye height (60 to 66″), a dimmable ceiling recessed can for general light, and a moisture-rated downlight over the tub area.
  • Use hooks, not bars, on the WC wall to fit more towels in less space.

  • Install heated floors to elevate the comfort and luxury feel.

  • Add niches in the shower, and over the tub for bath accessories.
  • Hang a towel hook on the wall near the tub.

A partition defines a larger WC zone on the right measuring 42″ × 70″ and provides extra approach and transfer space beside the toilet. The layout keeps fixtures on perimeter walls and leaves the middle open for maneuvering.

Dimensions:

  • Place the faucet valve at the entrance for easy reach.
  • Place a grab-bar typically 33″ to 36″ AFF.
  • Add a comfort-height toilet sized to a 17″ to 19″ seat with at least 18″ from the centerline to the side wall. Ensure one side is kept clear for lateral transfer.
  • Install a wall-hung or open-knee vanity with a 27″ knee clearance min., and a 34″ to 36″ counter height with lever faucets for easy use.
  • Add lever-style hardware & rocker switches placed 34″ to 48″ AFF and avoid using knobs for better accessibility

7×10 Private Shared Jack-a6x8 bathroomnd-Jill Bathroom Design

Each bedroom on either side gets its own sink and toilet while sharing a central storage closet, for a Jack-and-Jill bathroom design that delivers privacy and harmony for busy households.

7x10 Private Shared Jack-and-Jill Bathroom Design

Floor Plan Details: This symmetrical 7′ × 10′ private shared bath plan has harmony in mind by giving each person their own dedicated mini-bathroom with a separate vanity, and toilet with a central shared closet or shower, depending on the need. Each side has its own 28″ door that opens from their bedroom into a personal grooming bay with a 30″ × 18″ vanity. A pocket door then leads to a private WC room, so there’s no toilet sharing. Between the two sides sits a shared 51″ × 48″ closet, or space for a shower room. The result is that siblings get their privacy and independence without doubling the square footage.

Dimensions:

  • Room size: 7′ × 10′ (84″ × 120″)
  • Bedroom entry doors: 28″ each
  • Vanities (each side): 30″ × 18″
  • WC compartments (each side): 30″ × 60″ with about 28″ front clearance
  • Shared center closet: 51″ × 48″

Design Tips:

  • Pocket doors to each WC save swing space and add extra privacy.
  • Use solid-core door slabs on soft-close tracks to cut down the noise.
  • Add a mirror above each of the two sink stations with identical lighting, outlets, and storage.
  • Label the closet with left/right bins or pull-outs so each side keeps its own toiletries and towels.
  • Swap out the closet for a shower enclosure with a sliding partition on each side.
  • Use independent vent fans in each WC and put a motion sensor on each.
  • Install task lighting at 60 to 66″ AFF on both vanities with dimmers for late-night use.
  • Add insulation in the partition between the two WCs and the closet walls for better sound control.
  • Use durable finishes like quartz tops and high-wipe semigloss paint to stand up to kid/teen use.

Perfect for: Shared children’s bathrooms, guest suites, or those wanting dual-access designs.
